Comic panel skeleton on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo framed as a comic book panel shows a skull-faced figure with a skeletal ribcage lunging forward, beside a dark silhouette of a cat and a dark cloaked shape. Bold solid black fills contrast with fine grey shading and hatched motion lines, and speech bubble lettering across the top reads "GASP! I'VE COME BACK FROM THE GRAVE TO DESTROY YOU!" The panel sits vertically along the forearm against a plain, pale skin background.

The bones came over the crest of Vell Pass just as the rain thinned, which was the first thing I didn't like. Dead men don't wait for good weather. Harriet's cat was already hissing from inside my coat, all claws and opinions, and Ambrose Tull, who sold patent liniment out of a painted wagon, had gone the colour of wet paper beside me.

The skeleton wore a black mourning coat buttoned over a ribcage that had seen better days, and it came down the slope with its arms flung wide like a man greeting an old friend. Tull read the thing aloud as if it were a headline. "Gasp," he said, and then the skull opened its jaw and spoke in a voice like a drawer of cutlery. "I have come back from the grave to destroy you."
The cat went out of my coat like a thrown stone. It landed on the bony shoulders and worked at the skull with a fury that I can only describe as professional. The cloaked figure behind the wagon, whom I had taken for a bandit, threw back its hood and was only a boy with a lamp, and he was crying. The skeleton staggered, swore in a language that sounded like chess pieces falling, and then stopped fighting altogether.
Tull knelt in the mud and lifted the skull by its brow. "Thirty years ago," he said, "I sold this gentleman a bottle of restorative that promised he would never die." The cat washed a paw on the jawbone and did not look at either of us. The boy held up the lamp, and in its light I read the label Tull had dropped: Guaranteed to outlast the grave.
