Origami crane tattoo on the inner wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A faceted black origami crane is tattooed on the inner wrist, with its wings angled outward and its body drawn as sharp, folded planes. The design uses solid black fills with clean edges and no shading, set against pale skin. A silver bead and black cord bracelet sits above the tattoo, and the hand is visible at the top of the frame.

Margate's Winter Gardens smelled of floor polish and wet coats, and Ada had folded the note so many times it had gone soft as cloth. She turned it over on the cloakroom ledge while the band packed up its brass. Someone had drawn a boat on the back, badly, with the sea written in capitals.

Teddy had never been good with words. He could fix a radio valve and tune a piano, but on paper he went quiet. So the note had come folded into a crane instead, sharp-winged and flat along the keel, the kind her grandfather had taught her to make from the margins of old ration letters. Ada pressed the wings open with her thumbs. Inside, in pencil, he had written a time and a platform number.

She missed the last tram. She missed the first one too, because she stood on the pier with the crane in her palm, the wind trying to take it, and watched the grey water shoulder against the piling. The lamps came on along the front one by one. Somewhere a gull cried like a hinge that needed oil.

At half past six a figure came up the slope from the station with a suitcase in each hand, and she realised she had been folding and unfolding the crane for an hour, each crease sharper than the last. She could no longer tell which wing had been the wrong one. He set the cases down on the boards. Neither of them spoke. Ada held up the bird, and Teddy, very carefully, pressed its tail flat and closed the wings the way you would seal a letter you meant to keep.
