Compass rose and birds on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A compass rose sits at the centre of the forearm, with a dotted outer circle, thin radiating points and small lettering around the rim. A partial world map outline appears to the left, and two bird silhouettes sit near the bottom of the frame. The linework is fine and the ink is a single blue-grey tone, with the photograph taken at a slight angle under warm light.

Your grandfather would never let the printer sell us the fussy compass, the one with thirty-two points and little gold fleurs. He said a man only needs to know which way the wind is blowing and where the rocks sit, and the rest is showing off. So the rose above my kettle has its eight proper points, and the dotted ring he traced round it with a bent nib the winter before the Mary Ellen was sold. Mind you don't lose the pencil marks under the lettering. He wrote the names of the headlands there in his own hand, and half of them have been worn away by my thumb.

The swallows came every March, dropping onto the rigging as if they had paid for the berth. He counted them into the logbook: forty-one the year you were born, and a hundred and six the year the fog came down over Lundy and nobody could see the bowsprit. He reckoned birds never got lost because they carried the whole chart in their heads, and the trick was to stop trusting your own. Then he'd laugh and tell me I'd trusted him for forty years and look where it got us.

Your letter came from Lisbon with a postcard of a tram, and I have propped it against the sugar tin where the morning light catches it. I have turned it so the north arrow points at the kettle, the way he taught me. Everything else on the card is wrong, but the word on the back is right, and so is the little bird you drew in the margin. Come home when the swallows do. I will leave the light on over the chart and count you in.
