Black and grey shaded compass rose tattoo on the inner forearm, with the script quote Not all those who wander are above it and the word Lost below.

Compass rose and quote on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded compass rose sits in a circular bezel with N, E, S and W marked, and a script quote reading Not all those who wander are runs above it. The word Lost, in bold script with a sweeping underline, sits below the compass. The work is black ink only, using fine outlines and grey shading across the points, and the subject is centred on the forearm against a warm indoor background.

Sit down there on the wall, where the sun still catches the bricks. You'll want to know why the paths in this garden run like the points of a compass, because everybody who comes through the gate asks, and my father never once gave the same answer twice. North is the long gravel walk to the glasshouse, east the box hedge that drops its leaves early, south the lavender bed nobody dares weed, and west the little door in the wall that has been painted shut since the war.

Then the boy came up from the village with a letter for the vicar's wife and an idea of his own. He had heard the old gardener planted the whole place so that a person could never get properly lost in it. So he walked it blindfold, counting his steps. Forty to the glasshouse, twelve to the lavender, and every time he reached the centre, the fountain with the cracked dolphin, he stopped and turned his face to the wind and laughed, because the sun told him nothing and the stones told him everything.

On the seventh day he found the gardener kneeling by the sundial with a brass compass open in his lap. "You've been walking in circles," the old man said. "Clever boy. Circles are the only honest route here." He tapped the glass, and the needle swung, shivered and settled, pointing straight at the gate. "A compass only tells you where north is. It never once promised you a way home."

The boy stayed until the lavender went to seed. He never did find the painted door, and he never stopped looking for it, and that, my father always said, was the whole reason for the garden.
