Compass rose on inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small compass rose tattoo on the inner wrist, with the letters N, E, S and W marking the points. The design uses thin, precise linework with fine radiating points and a central circle, drawn in a single dark tone that looks brown rather than black. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against pale skin and a cream textured fabric.

Mr Pell says a compass drawn wrong is worse than none, because a man trusts it. So I sat at the chart table with the lamp swinging its brown light across the paper and redrew the rose for the third time that week. The Ardent Mary was running north past the Azores with her topsails cracking like pistol shots, and every sea that came over the bow found its way under my door.

The first rose I made for the binnacle lid had the east point a hair short. Pell held it up to the lamp and said nothing, which was worse. The second had all eight winds right, but I had crowded the S against the rim so that it looked like a snake had got into the ink. I learned my letters from a schoolmaster in Deptford who rapped knuckles for a blot, and I kept hearing his ruler while I ruled the fine spokes one by one, from the centre outward.
On the fourth night the needle hung steady in its bowl, pointing where it always had, and I understood that Pell had never been checking the drawing at all. He was checking me. A rose is only a promise that someone took the trouble to measure. Every line is a small decision about how far to reach and how thin to leave the point. He took the sheet from my hand and folded it into his coat without a word.
In the morning I found the third drawing pinned above the lid. Pell stood beneath it rubbing at the W with his thumb, then stopped, because the ink had dried the colour of strong tea and the letters sat straight. "Good enough to steer by," he said, and went up on deck into the grey.
