Anchor and red heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black anchor sits near the wrist, joined by a thin black line that loops around a small circle and dot before rising to a solid red heart. The linework is fine and even, with the anchor filled in solid black and the heart in flat red. The forearm is shown against a plain white background, with a hand and French manicured nails visible at the top of the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave the kettle alone, because this is a story about string. Nobody in Porthgwin in 1952 owned a telephone that worked past the Bell Rock, so when the herring boats went out in November, the women tied their worries to whatever would hold them.

Nell Pascoe was sixteen and sharp as a gutting knife. Her brother Davy sailed the Marigold with three other lads and an anchor older than the harbour wall. On the morning he left, she knotted a length of tarred twine to the ring of that anchor, looped it once round a brass button she had taken from her mother's good coat, and tied the free end to a tin with a red wax seal pressed into the lid. Inside, she had written one line. Davy never opened it. He was not supposed to. He was supposed to bring it back.
The gale came in off the Atlantic on the third night. The Marigold dragged her anchor across the reef, and Davy, hanging on the tiller with the sea coming green over the rail, felt the line go taut and then go slack. He thought he had lost everything. When the lamps came back on in the harbour, the anchor came up in the grey light, and there, wound round the flukes like a ribbon on a parcel, was the tin, its seal still red and dry.
Nell never told anyone what she wrote. Davy kept the tin on the shelf above his bunk until the day he died, and the button stayed on the line. That's why the Marigold's anchor is painted on the wall of the Ship Inn with a little red heart above it. Now, the kettle.
