Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A eight-pointed compass rose sits at the centre of the image, with N at the top and S at the bottom, and points reaching towards the edges at left and right. The points are filled with blended blue, green, purple, pink and orange tones, outlined in black with clean, sharp linework. The tattoo is shown on a pale forearm against a tiled floor and a brown background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the back of the Michaelmas fair, where the lorries parked on the common, a woman called Ruth Harrow kept a painted caravan and a box of brass instruments. The fairground men said she could tell a man which road he would take by spinning a compass on the bonnet of his van. She charged a penny and never once asked where anyone was going.

The summer the carousel horses were sold off, a boy named Tobias Quill came asking for a way home. His mother had gone east with a cart of ribbons and had not sent word since Lent. Ruth did not take his penny. She set the old compass spinning on the caravan step, and the needle would not settle on north. It kept turning, blue then green then violet, the way the light moved over the wet grass at dusk.

"It is not lost," she told him. "It is only everywhere at once. Every road leads out from the middle, so you must find the middle first." She gave him a pencil and told him to draw eight points out from wherever he stood, and to fill each one with what he remembered: the smell of hot sugar, the brass band, the blue tent. He drew until his hand cramped. When he showed her, the points reached past the edge of the page.

He walked east the next morning with the drawing folded in his coat. At a crossroads outside Ely a cart stood with a woman asleep under a shawl of orange silk, and he knew her by the colours before he knew her face. Back on the common, the compass on Ruth's step had stopped turning. It pointed at nothing, which she said was the same as pointing everywhere, and after that she kept it on the step for anyone who asked her the way home.
