He was wrong, I think. One is a great deal larger than the other and sits farther off, and yet they keep the same angle to each other all night, as if they had agreed on it long ago.

We lost the chart box in the gale off the Azores, so I have been navigating by memory and by the old pilot's trick of sighting between them.
