Blue gradient circle on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single small circle sits on the inner forearm, filled with a soft blue-teal gradient that fades slightly across its surface. The edges are clean and the shading looks smooth, with no outline visible. The circle is centred on a plain pale arm against a teal wall, with a dark navy sleeve and patterned top at the left edge of the frame.

He ran the coconut shy in those days, and the gaff's daughter, a thin girl called Tamsin Vell with printer's ink under her nails, came to him one wet evening with a glass marble no bigger than a robin's egg. She said it held the sea inside it. Amos laughed and told her the sea was too big for any bottle, but she pressed the marble into his palm and closed his fingers over it, and it was cold for a moment and then it was not.

Next morning the fair struck camp before dawn, and he found the marble had gone blue at the rim where his skin had held it, the colour creeping in from the edges toward the middle like the tide coming up a beach. Tamsin was gone with the printing cart. He never saw her again, but every night after that he turned his wrist to the lamp and watched the moon sink a little further into the glass, and waited for the water to come back in.
