Two black dotwork tattoos on a person's thighs, a conch shell on the left and a scallop shell on the right, with a partial claw tattoo at the left edge.

Conch and scallop shells on thighs

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two shells are tattooed on the upper legs of a person wearing dark trousers and a white top. The left shell is a whelk or conch drawn with stippled dotwork and fine outlines, and the right is a scallop with radiating ridges built from dots and lines. Both designs are in black ink on a neutral background, with a partial claw tattoo visible at the far left.

The flour was still cold from the delivery when Dilys tipped the first sack into the mixer, and I remember thinking she had gone soft in the head. Four in the morning in a harbour town is no time for a pastry argument, so I kept my mouth shut and greased the tins while she muttered about the tide.

She kept a shoebox of shells on the shelf above the proving drawer, gathered over forty years of walking the sands before the shop opened. Every batch of the scallop biscuits came out ridged the same way, because she pressed each one against a real valve with the flat of a butter knife, fanning the lines out from the hinge. The whelk loaf was harder. She rolled the dough into a tight spiral, pinched the lip into a flared mouth, then took a darning needle and pricked a thousand small dots over the crust until it looked dredged up from the shingle.

"Nobody buys the ones that look like bread," she said, when I asked why she bothered. "They buy the ones that look like they came from somewhere."

The lifeboat crew collected their order at six, a grey light coming up over the harbour wall. Dilys wrapped the scallops in waxed paper and set the whelk on the counter, still warm, its curl catching the window. One of the young men picked it up, turned it over, laughed at the dots, and asked how she'd managed it. She just slid the shoebox back onto its shelf and said the sea was patient, and so was she.
