Mountain and wave tattoos in circle frames
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit inside thin circular outlines, one showing a rugged mountain range and the other a large curling wave with spray. The mountain is built from stippled dots and fine lines for shading, while the wave uses bold contour lines with dotted texture and small dots above it. The work is entirely black and grey, and the tattoos are centred in the frame against pale skin and a lace fabric draped across the top.

Somewhere below the Horn the ink ran dry, so Marta mixed the last of it with lamp soot and a thimble of rum, and you held the lantern steady while she worked. She had learned the needle from a Dutch gunner who died of fever off Tierra del Fuego, and her hand still shook on the long lines, so she pricked the mountain in dots and let the shading do the rest.

You had argued over the design for three weeks. Marta wanted a compass rose. You wanted the ridge of Harbour Point, where the ship would turn for home, drawn the way the captain had described it, grey and broken like old bread. The wave was Marta's idea, a curl of white water she had sketched on the back of a chart after the storm that split the mainsail. The bosun insisted on the circles and ruled them himself with a bent nail, because nothing aboard his ship was going to be wonky.
Harbour Point rose out of the fog six weeks later, ridged and grey and stippled exactly as your forearm had promised. Nobody cheered. The men stood at the rail and looked at it the way you look at a letter you have been afraid to open. You rolled your sleeve down over the wave, the damp wool clinging, and left the mountain bare to the wind.
On the quay the next morning a child asked which picture was the true one. You pushed the sleeve up, showed him the mountain, then tugged the cuff back over the sea. The tide was coming in across the stones, slow and patient, and he watched it climb the steps toward your boots as if it might pick a side.
