Conch shell on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a conch shell with its spiral crown at the top and a flared lip at the base. The linework is fine and precise, with hatched and stippled shading along the shell's ridges and folds. The shell sits centred on the forearm against plain skin, with a dark background and a red sleeve visible at the top of the frame.

The shell came up the valley in a carter's sack the spring the Ashdown pit flooded. Nobody in Hollin Row had seen the sea, but everybody knew what a conch was for. Old Mrs Pryce kept it on the windowsill of the chapel house, and when the seam ran wet she blew it from the top of the tip, one long low note that carried over the slag heaps to the men below.

Her grandson Tom was the first to ask why a thing from salt water should speak so well in a valley of coal dust. She told him the shell remembered the tide it came out of, and that a note blown into it went back the same road. "Then blow it toward the sea," he said. She laughed, and then she stopped laughing, because the lamp count at the cage head was one short.
Tom took the shell up the tip in the grey light of the afternoon shift and blew north, where the water had been drained and drowned and drained again. He blew until his lips split. Down in the dark, the men said later, they heard a tide come in through the stone, slow and cold, and it pushed the missing lad's lamp up the shaft the way a wave pushes a bottle onto sand.
The shell went back on the sill. Nobody asked Tom to blow it again, and he did not offer. Each spring the water rose in the old workings, and each spring someone's grandmother set the shell where the window light would catch its spiral crown, and each spring the valley listened for the sea to answer.
