Constellation tattoo on the upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black fine line constellation of small dots and star shapes, joined by thin dotted lines, sits on the upper chest near the collarbone. The linework is delicate and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin tone is warm and the wearer's white top with a pink and green floral print frames the tattoo at the left edge of the photo.

The mule would not go past the cairn, so Tomas unloaded it there and sat with his back against the stones while the snow came sideways off the ridge. His lamp had gone out an hour below the col. He had matches, but the wind kept taking them, and each time he cupped his hands and struck, the light showed him only the grey wall of cloud and the rope tied to the mule's saddle.

Then the cloud tore open for the space of a breath. Above him the sky was clear and hard, and the stars came through in the shapes his grandmother had made him learn at the kitchen table, joining them with a pencil on the back of a seed packet. She had said every pass had its own stars, and a man who knew them would never walk off a cliff. He found the bent line she called the shepherd's crook, then the pair of bright stars that marked the notch, and he saw the thin dotted path running down between them as clearly as if someone had drawn it with a fine nib.

He stood, lifted the pack onto the mule, and walked where the stars pointed, keeping the loose hook of the crook over his left shoulder. The snow filled his boot prints almost as fast as he made them. Twice the cloud closed and he stopped, counted to a hundred, and waited for the light to come back.

At the bottom of the descent a bothy stood with its door hanging by one hinge. Inside, he scratched the pattern into the lintel with his thumbnail, a dot and a dot and a dot, so that the next man who came over in the dark would know which stars to trust.
