Snow globe with cabin and mountain

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A snow globe sits at the centre of the design, containing a wooden cabin, a rocky peak, pine trees and a starry night sky. The globe is framed by dark leaves at the sides and a banded base decorated with orange and cream teardrop shapes. Bold black outlines contrast with smooth colour shading in blues, greens, ochres and oranges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The man who brought the snow globe into Ferris and Daughter's on a wet Thursday would not say where he had found it, only that the water inside had been still since his grandfather's day. Mr Ferris turned it over under the lamp. The base was banded like a church pillar and dotted with cream teardrops, and the glass held a sky full of stars that did not match the grey afternoon pressing at the window. He offered eight pounds, which was more than it was worth to anyone who did not already want it.

I was the one who cleaned it that evening, with a soft brush and a drop of spirit on a cloth, and I did not shake it. Nobody told me not to. The cabin sat on its green slope with one window lit, and the pines beside it were so fine I could count the needles through the magnifier on the bench. When I set it down, the light in the cabin seemed to flicker, though the lamps in our shop were electric and steady.

In the morning the globe was on the sill where I had left it, but the snow had settled into a new shape. A narrow path ran from the cabin door down to the rocky edge of the base, and a line of small boot prints ended at the glass. Mr Ferris said the varnish had cracked and the light had played tricks. He sold it that Saturday to a woman from Scarborough who paid in coins and asked nothing about it.

She brought it back the following week without a word and set it on the sill herself. When I lifted it, the stars had thinned to a dozen, and the cabin window had gone dark. Faint on the inside of the glass was a small handprint, pressed from within, and a thread of smoke was rising from the chimney, as though someone had only just lit the stove and stepped out to look at the mountain.
