A drawn design shows two figures in a close embrace, one with dark brown hair pulled back and the other with a wavy brown quiff, kissing in front of a large red sun. A blue ribbon banner across the lower half reads IN LOVE WITH A SCOUNDREL, and four-pointed sparkles and small dots fill the background. Bold black outlines, flat colour fills and simple shading give it a classic flash look, with the composition centred on the couple.

Come closer, all of you, the back benches too, because my knees have given up the walk to the front and my voice is the only thing left that still carries. Sit. Pass the bread to the boy in the blue jacket. You all think you know how Dorrit Vane came to marry a scoundrel. You have only heard the part where he sold her father's cart.

Thirty summers back, with the red sun sitting low over the salt flats, Dorrit ran the fuel depot at Cinder Well. Her hair was pulled back so tight it made your eyes water to look at her. She could read a bill of lading faster than any clerk in the province. Then one evening a pilot called Ned Harrow limped in on a ship with one good engine and a mouthful of excuses, and offered her three crates of contraband rain for a kiss.

She laughed in his face. Then she counted the crates, found two of them full of sand, and made him dig out the third with his bare hands. He did it singing, which she later swore was the most irritating thing she had ever witnessed. By the end of the week it was the only thing she thought about.

He came back at the turn of the next season with nothing in his hold but a patched map of the northern lanes and a promise he could not keep. She took the map. She took him too, though she told everyone it was the map. So raise your glasses to the scoundrel and to the woman who saw straight through him and loved him anyway. Now watch the sun come up over the hall, the red one, just as it did on the day they first kissed beside the pumps.
