Matching fine line symbols on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people hold hands, with the camera framing their arms and upper legs, so only the tattoos are clearly visible. Each tattoo is a small, thin black outline: one shows a triangle with a vertical line, and the other shows two circles joined by a short line. The image has a warm, soft tone with a plain pale background and no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The two wells at Kessar had never been dug by the same hand, and the village said that was the trouble. Ilma's grandfather had sunk the eastern one with a bronze blade and a borrowed rope. The western one belonged to the potter's family, who had cut a stone triangle to mark its lip, with a plumb line hung from the point. Nobody drew water from both. The old women said a well that had no sister would sour.

Ilma and Tobin were sent down together one dry summer, because the eastern well had gone to mud and the western one ran clean only in the dark hours. They had to lower one bucket between them, hand over hand, each holding the rope with one wrist while the other kept the clay jar from knocking the stone. They did not speak for three days. On the fourth, Tobin's rope slipped, and Ilma caught it with her bare palm, and neither of them let go.

When the rains came they dug a channel under the scrub, a ditch no wider than a forearm, joining the two mouths at the bottom where the water sat. The priest came to bless it and found both stone rims already level with moss on them. He asked who had measured them. Ilma said the water had. Tobin said nothing, only tied the plumb line to the newer rope.

By autumn the village drew from both wells and nobody spoke of sourness again. The stone triangle still stands at the western lip, its line hanging straight down into the dark, and the water that rises under it tastes, the children say, of two hands.
