Black and white photo of a fine line script tattoo reading Courage on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Courage script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm and wrist with the word Courage written in a flowing script across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with a slightly heavier stroke on the capital C and a soft, tapering finish on the final letters. The image is black and white, with a shallow focus that blurs the dark bokeh background behind the arm.

"Load the brush just so, Nell, or the C comes out like a dropped stitch." She had been told she was too quick, that her hand ran ahead of her eye.

"Start heavy, finish light," he said. "The capital carries the weight. The rest you let go of as your breath runs out. Nobody reads the last letters properly. They just feel them."

The order that came in on the Friday was an odd one. A Mrs Haworth, whose husband drove the night coal lorry to Bolton and back, wanted a single word painted on the inside of the cab's sun visor. She had no money to speak of, so she brought a tin of boiled sweets and a photograph of the lorry. Tully took the tin and said the word was not a shop word, so it would be done properly or not at all.

Nell did the C in one long pull, heavy as a thumbprint. The ou came easily. By the time she reached the g her wrist was tired and the stroke thinned, the way a voice does at the end of a hard day. Then the e curled out to a hair's width and stopped, as if it had only paused. Tully ran his thumb over it and said nothing, which from him was praise. He reached for the turps and the rag, and the paint was still wet when they locked up.
