Strength script with infinity loop on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows an arm and wrist with the word strength tattooed in flowing black script. A thin looping line sweeps beneath and around the lettering, forming an infinity-style curve. The ink is solid black on pale skin, set against a dark, softly blurred background with the tattoo centred on the wrist.

The rope had to be spliced before the tide came over the causeway, and Maud Ferris had only forty minutes of light left to do it. Her father's hands had gone stiff over the winter, so the loop was hers to finish. Two ends of old hawser lay across the sawhorses, frayed where the salt had got in, and she unlaid the strands with a marlinspike the way he had taught her, one turn at a time.

Across the water the customs hut showed a single lamp. Every Thursday the mail boat carried letters to the far bank, and every Thursday someone over there sent a cord back wound round a stick to say the crossing had held. Her father called it the endless line. It had no start and no finish, only a tuck where the two ends met and were buried under themselves until nobody could find the join.

She worked the last tuck with her thumb, feeling the lay pull tight and even. The word painted above the hut door was STRENGTH, in the looping hand of the sign-writer who had walked over the hills the year the bridge flooded. Strength, her father had said, was not the thickness of the rope but the way it doubled back and held. Maud drew the splice until the loop hummed under the load.

When the boat rounded the bend, its lamp swung twice across the water. She tied the loop to the post, wiped her palms on her coat, and went down to meet the mail with a stick ready to wind the reply.
