I hope you dance script on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot showing the words I hope you dance written in thin black cursive script across the top of the foot. The linework is even and delicate, with the lettering set in black ink against the skin. The composition is angled from the ankle towards the toes, with a second foot and a white towel in the background.

Your father would have told you the sea is no place for slow feet, and he would have been right, though he never learned to dance himself, so mind what I say about floors. The hall above the chandler's on Quay Street still has the same boards, nine of them loose near the piano, and Mrs Pardoe still counts the beat with her heel while the fishermen pretend not to look. I have written this out four times because the first three ended up in the bin with the stamps stuck to them.

The Lark sails on the evening tide, and I know you will be standing at the rail with your cap in your hand, watching the harbour lamps go soft. Don't stand too long. The lamps are the only thing on this coast that stays put, and they will make you homesick faster than the swell.

Take this card with you. It is the last of the good pencil, sharpened with Mr Yeo's knife, and I have used it to write across the top so you can read it when the watch is quiet: I hope you dance, love. Not because the wind will be kind, because it won't be, but because the deck will rock and the cook will sing, and somebody always has to find the rhythm of the boat before the boat finds theirs.

When the Lark comes back in October I will be on the quay by the bollards, and if you have been dancing I want to see it in the way you climb the steps. Mrs Pardoe has promised to play the waltz over the loose board. Come up two at a time. Your mother.
