Traditional flower tattoo on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A large flower with eight rounded pale mint petals sits on the top of a foot, with a ring of small pink dots at its centre and a yellow-centred dark core. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, which are filled with flat colour and light shading. Two green leaves with black outlines frame the flower at the upper right and lower left, against plain skin.

Brother Anselm will not let you touch the vellum until you have learned to hold the brush the way the rose is held, lightly, as if it might bruise. He says this every morning in the scriptorium while the bell for lauds is still ringing across the wet fields. You nod and grind the verdigris and the lead white with a little rainwater, and you do not tell him that your hands have been shaking since the abbot's letter came.

The letter said the bishop would visit at Michaelmas and that the Book of Hours for the Duchess must be finished by then, its margins full of flowers. Every flower you have painted this month has come out wrong. The petals keep spreading into the gold leaf, and the centre, which should be a single yellow eye, keeps swelling into something that looks like a face. So at night you walk to the herb garden behind the infirmary and sit among the mint, pressing the pale leaves between your fingers until they smell sharp enough to make you cry.
On the last night of September you find an old pattern book in the bottom of the almonry chest, its corners gnawed by mice. On one page a flower is drawn with eight round petals and a ring of little pink beads around its heart, and beside it someone has written in a cramped hand: paint the petals first and the outline will forgive you. You try it at dawn. The mint wash goes down clean, the black line follows like a stitch, and the bishop, when he arrives, looks at the page for a long time before he says nothing at all.
