Cracked red heart with flames and lettering
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A red heart with black shading and a green zigzag crack runs through its centre, set against a black flame burst. Lettering reads THE WORLD above the heart, WILL NEVER to the side and TAKE MY HEART below, with the words partly obscured in places. The bold black outlines and flat red and green fills give the piece a classic traditional look, photographed close up on skin.

Dolores found the ring in the hem of the flower girl's dress, two minutes before the vicar asked for it. She had sewn that hem herself that morning, pinning and unpicking until the lace sat right, and she knew the loose stitch was hers. Behind her the organ was wheezing through something by Elgar, and the bride's mother was pacing the vestry like a lion that had been promised a bigger cage.

Dolores had been married forty-one years to Ray Coyle, who fixed boat engines in Whitby and once told a bailiff, to his face, that the world could have his van but would never have his good spanner. She still carried that spanner in her apron pocket. She took it out now, not to use it, only to feel the weight, then put it back and walked up the aisle with the ring clenched in her fist.
The bride saw her coming and laughed, the way Ray used to laugh when the squall came over the harbour wall and everyone else was running for the boats. Dolores pressed the ring into the groom's palm and told him to mend the broken clasp properly before the reception, and to hold on to it. Then she sat in the front pew, crossed her ankles and let the vicar begin, the spanner still heavy against her hip.
