The lift in Harrow Court has stuck again between eleven and twelve, and you press the red button twice, because the first press achieved nothing last time either. Mrs Adeyemi from flat 14 stands beside you with a carrier bag of tinned tomatoes knocking against her shin. The panel light flickers as if it is still considering the matter.

"You still have the key to the bin store?" she asks. You tell her Dev took it in March and never gave it back, which is the most you have said to her in two years. Somewhere below, a neighbour's radio is playing the same football phone-in it plays every Saturday, and the steel walls carry it up to you in a thin, bright thread.

The light dies. In the dark she starts talking about a man she met at a dance in Lewisham in 1979, who wore a black ribbon on his lapel for a cousin he had lost and who told her, within ten minutes, that he was a poor bet. She married him anyway. You hear the smile in her voice before you can see anything.

The engineer's voice crackles through the speaker, the cable groans, and the doors part onto twelve. She steps out first and turns back, holding the bag in both arms. "Same time next Saturday, then," she says, and you realise she means the lift, and that you have been counting on it.
