A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bus had stalled twice on the switchbacks above the col, and by the third hairpin you had stopped pretending the driver knew what he was doing. Your sister had the booklet open on her knees. Cracker Jack, series twenty-four, four of nine, bought for forty pence from the tobacconist in Sion, and she was not going to give you the clown.

"Fish," she said. "Frog. Skate. Clown." She read them out like the register at school. You wanted the skate, with its little red wings, because it looked like it could get you out of the valley faster than the bus.

Outside the window the pass fell away in grey shelves, and a goat stood on a ledge as if someone had paid it to watch. At the summit the driver let everyone off to stretch while he poured water over the engine. You licked your palm, pressed the skate face down on the paper, and held it there counting to thirty while the wind tried to lift the corner.

When you peeled it back there was a lopsided boot with blue wheels and a grin that had gone slightly sideways. Your sister swapped her clown for the frog, swearing it looked wetter than yours. Below you the road ran down for eleven kilometres, and nobody on the bus looked up once to see the wings.
