Envelope with heart and flowers flash
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a sealed envelope with a heart on the flap, framed by two five-petalled flowers with dotted centres and pointed leaves. The design uses bold, even outlines with small interior lines suggesting the envelope's folds, and no shading. It is drawn on translucent paper placed on a wooden board, with the design centred in the frame.

The lamp in the lodge kitchen has been smoking since Tuesday and the overman says it is the wick and not the air, though nobody believes him. Father sits by it every evening with his boots off, reading your last letter aloud to the dog as if the dog were the one who needed telling. I have not had the heart to tell him the dog cannot read. It had never been opened. I stood there in the lamplight with my helmet dripping and I thought how many days a letter can wait in a dark place before anybody thinks to look. I have written back on the back of it so the man who sorts the tins will know it was answered.
Send the next one to the chapel box, not the house. Father has started walking down to meet the post and I would rather he had a reason to walk slowly. Tell me the sea is as grey as you say and that the heart on the wax is still holding. Yours, always, Tom.
