Close-up of a tiny black fine line sun tattoo on a woman's back, with a beach and sea in the background.

Small sun tattoo on a back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small sun drawn in thin black linework, with a central circle and short rays, sitting on the mid back. The subject is seen from behind, with a sandy beach and blue sea behind and a floral bikini top in view. The ink is a single black tone on tanned skin, and the composition places the small design in the lower centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shift whistle has gone at six and the lamp room is already steaming with wet wool. Your father is in the queue for the cage, his helmet knocked crooked, and he tells you again that the sun is for people who don't go down. You say nothing. You have a nail in your pocket and a slate from the back step, and you have been saving both for a week.

Down the row, the washing hangs grey on the lines, and the sky over Hollin Pit has been the colour of old porridge since March. Mrs Cartwright says the seam will come good by summer. Nobody believes her, but everybody repeats it, because repeating it costs nothing and crying in front of the children costs a great deal.

So you sit on the chapel wall and scratch a circle into the slate, then short thin rays round it, careful as a stitch in a torn sleeve. It is no bigger than a thumbprint. When you hold it up to the light from the colliery gate, the line catches and looks almost warm.

Your father comes up out of the cage at dusk with coal dust in his eyelashes. He studies the slate for a long time. Then he takes the nail from your fingers, bends over the wall, and adds one more ray, pointing straight at the pithead, as if to tell it where to look.
