Outline cat with curling tail on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black outline of a sitting cat, with its ears raised and its tail curling round at the bottom of the design. The linework is thin and even, with slight variation in weight along the tail and fur tufts. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the photo is taken at a slight angle with a blurred background of denim and purple fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have worked the Vole Hill crossing for eleven years, and the cat has sat on the sandbag wall beside booth three for nine of them. It watches the queue with its tail wrapped neatly round its feet, as though it is working out who owes it money. Nobody feeds it. The drivers say it belongs to the customs shed, and the shed says it belongs to the drivers.

On the night the fog came off the reservoir thick enough to swallow the barrier lights, a lorry stopped at booth three with a driver who had nothing but a folded map and a tin of sardines. You checked the seals, the cab and the bunk. When you looked up, the cat had dropped onto the bonnet and sat with its back to the windscreen, ears pricked, staring at the trailer doors as if it had been posted there.

You opened them. Inside stood forty crates of mantel clocks, every one ticking at a slightly different pace, and on top of the nearest crate a grey kitten slept in a nest of packing straw. The driver swore in three languages and then in a fourth, which you suspect was just a long sigh. You wrote clocks, unsealed, time-sensitive on the form, because there was no box for what you had found.

In the morning the lorry was gone and the fog had lifted. The cat was back on the wall, tail curled round its feet, watching the queue. You raised a hand to it. It did not wave back, but it lifted one ear, which from a cat is as close as anything gets to a signed declaration.
