Dog and cat nose to nose on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a dog in profile on the left and a cat in profile on the right, meeting nose to nose in the centre. The design is drawn as a single continuous black line with no shading, giving it a minimal look. It sits on smooth, pale skin across the shoulder, with the line work filling most of the frame against a plain background.

The last ferry out of Haddow left with the tide, and the dog was not on it. Her name was Pell, and she had kept watch over the village since the grain stores sank into the reed-beds. The cat, Sorrel, lived in the old lighthouse at the end of the causeway, where nobody had lit a lamp in three generations. Each morning she came down the rocks to sit on the wall and count the boats coming in.

The people of Haddow said the two would never meet, because a cat keeps her distance and a dog keeps his post. Then the great flood came up the estuary in the year the stars moved. Pell swam the channel with a rope in her teeth, and Sorrel climbed the lighthouse ladder with the other end wound round her paw. Neither spoke. When the rope went taut they touched noses over the black water, and the knot held.
When the flood drew back, the villagers asked what they might give them in thanks. Pell wanted nothing but her bowl. Sorrel only looked up at the dark glass of the lamp. So the people carried oil up the ladder, and the light came on again, and it has burned every night since. The dog stands at the foot of the causeway and the cat sits at the top, and their breath meets in the cold air above the channel.
Nobody has ever rowed out to cross between them. They have no need. Any boat coming in before dawn can see the two of them drawn in the mist, one unbroken line from the dog's muzzle to the cat's ear, and the sailors steer by it.
