Crescent moon and bunny on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a crescent moon sits beside a rabbit face with long ears and a simple smile on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against pale skin. The arm rests across a white knee-high sock with a dark sleeve at the lower left, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

The function room at the Crown smelled of carpet shampoo and warm sausage rolls, and the name badges had our Year Nine photos stuck on them, which was a cruelty nobody had warned us about. I was squinting at Dean Lowther's chin when I spotted Jess Harrowby across the room, holding a paper plate as if it had personally offended her.

Jess had drawn on everything when we were fourteen. She sold her rabbits at break for ten pence a time, always the same one: a round face, two long ears, a small smile, and beside it a crescent moon so thin you could have snapped it. Mr Pryce confiscated her planner twice. She said the rabbit was called Gilbert and lived on the moon, where it was quieter and the dinner ladies couldn't find him.
We didn't say much over the sausage rolls. She told me she worked nights at a bakery in Leeds now, that she still doodled when the proving drawers were slow, and that Gilbert had been retired with full honours. Then she laughed and asked if I still had the drawing she'd done on the back of my maths book. I didn't. I had honestly forgotten it existed.
On the drive home I found it anyway, folded inside my old school planner in the glovebox, soft as cloth. Beside the rabbit she had written in pencil, Don't wait up, he's gone to the moon. Underneath, smaller, she'd added a second moon and a second rabbit with its ears bent sideways, as if it had been dancing.
