Small Hello Kitty tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small black outline of the Hello Kitty character, a cat face with whiskers and a pink bow on its head, sits on the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with a single pink fill for the bow and no shading. The skin fills the frame against a blurred indoor background with wooden cabinets, and a green knitted sleeve is pushed up above the tattoo.

The cat came up the cliff path the week after the storm, when the oil was low and Agnes Dunmore had not slept in three nights. She was small and white, with black whiskers drawn out either side of her face like a pair of fishing lines, and a bow of pink ribbon tied on top of her head. Nobody in Skerrow owned a cat like that. Agnes said nothing about it and set a saucer of milk on the gallery step.

The cat did not touch the milk. She climbed the iron stairs one turn at a time, sat on the rail above the great lens, and watched the flame. Each night she was there. Each night the light burned a little brighter through the glass, and the boats coming in from the Hollin Bank saw the glint on that bow and steered wide of the rocks. The old men on the quay said it was the ribbon that did it, and Agnes let them think so.

On the last night of the autumn gales the wick guttered down to a blue bead. The cat jumped from the rail, worked the knot loose with one paw, and carried the ribbon in her teeth to the wick housing. She laid it across the brass and sat down on it. The flame climbed up white and steady, and it held until the sun came over the water, when the cat walked back down the stairs and did not come up again.

Agnes kept the ribbon pinned inside the lamp room door. The keepers who came after her replaced the wick, the lens and the stairs, but nobody ever threw out the pink scrap. When a boat came in safe past the Hollin Bank, someone would always touch the cold brass on the way down for their tea.
