Cartoon cat face with crescent moon on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a cartoon cat face sits on the inner wrist, with pointed ears, large round eyes, a crescent moon above the eyes, and long whiskers. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the design is shown in a close, slightly angled photo against a lilac fabric background.

The moon fell into the harbour at Skerrow the winter the herring failed, and nobody in the village would go down to the water to fetch it. The fishermen said the light was bad luck. The priest said it was a sin to touch something so bright. So the people shuttered their windows and sat by the peat fire, and the sea stayed black for forty nights.

The only one who went down was Ash, the grey cat from the net loft, who had never once in her life been afraid of wet paws. She walked out along the broken pier at low tide, her ears flat against the wind, and waited for the crescent to bob up near the steps. When it did, she hooked it with one claw, the way she would a fish, and dragged it up onto the weed.
It was smaller than she expected, and cold, and it did not want to be carried. Its light ran over her whiskers and made them shine like wire. She sat with it between her forepaws until the tide came back, then pushed it up the steps with her nose and watched it rise, slowly, into the empty sky where it belonged.
The herring came back the next week. The fishermen still say it was the moon that brought them, and the cat that kept the moon from drowning. Ash never told anyone otherwise. She only licked her paw and looked up with her great round eyes, as if she had been out for the air.
