Small Hello Kitty tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of the cartoon character Hello Kitty's face, shown in a black outline with whiskers, two dot eyes and a small nose. A pink bow sits on top of the head and is the only colour in the design. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist, with a pink knitted sleeve below and a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came in sideways over the Saturday stalls at Hollin Street, and you spent the first ten minutes wedging tarpaulin corners under the crates while the sky made up its mind. Your stall sells what the bigger shops won't: rubber keyrings, sticky notes shaped like teapots, a biscuit tin of stickers gone soft at the edges. The white cat with the pink bow sits at the front because it always sells first, and nobody ever asks why a cat with no mouth needs a bow at all.

A man in a yellow cagoule holds one up to the grey light and asks whether it's a real cat or a drawing. You tell him it's a drawing, and he says that's what he thought, and buys three for his nieces. Across the aisle, Marjorie from the knitwear van shakes water off her umbrella and calls over that the rain has driven off everyone with sense. You agree, and the two of you spend the afternoon watching the puddles grow into small lakes between the paving slabs.

At four o'clock a girl in a pink jumper stops at your table with her hands in her sleeves. She doesn't speak, only points at the cat, then at the tin, then at her own wrist, which she tucks away the moment you look. You count out a sticker and she shakes her head, so you press two into her palm anyway and she runs off towards the bus stop without looking back.

Packing up in the dark, you find one sticker stuck inside your van window, its edges curled by the wet, the bow still bright. You peel it off carefully and turn it over. On the back someone has written, in biro, Thank you for the mouthless one. You put it in the tin, under the others, and leave the lid off so the next customer in the rain can see the bow.
