Colour botanical tattoo of a sunflower with yellow petals and a purple-brown centre on the inner forearm, near the wrist.

Sunflower tattoo on the inner forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower seen from the front fills the inner forearm, with yellow petals radiating from a brown-purple centre marked with a fine spiral of dots. The petals are softly shaded with lighter and deeper yellows, giving them some depth, while the centre uses darker linework and stippling. A dark red woven bracelet sits on the wrist above the design against a green satin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last petrol station before the salt flats sold sunflower seeds in a jam jar by the till, and I bought the lot because the girl behind the counter said they came from a field nobody had planted. She shrugged when I asked where. "Out past the cattle grid, where the road gives up," she said, and turned the radio up over whatever I might have said next.

I drove with the window down and the jar wedged between my knees, the tarmac shimmering ahead like spilt water. Fence posts ticked past. A hawk held still over nothing. Then the land dipped and there they were, hundreds of heads, every one turned east toward the sun the way a crowd turns toward a parade, their petals gone the colour of old brass in the glare.

I pulled onto the verge and walked in. The centres were dense and brown-purple, packed with seeds in spirals that crossed each other like the threads of a net. My grandmother used to count them on the back of an envelope, clockwise and anticlockwise, and always arrived at the same two numbers, which made her laugh every time. I counted one head to thirty-four one way and fifty-five the other, and stood there feeling foolish and certain at once.

I poured the seeds into my palm, pressed a thumb-hole into the dry verge, and covered them with the flat of my hand. Then I drove on with the windows open, and in the mirror every head in the field had swung round to follow the car.
