Crescent moon and star on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with a beaded dotted edge and ornate scrolling filigree sits on the back of a hand, with a small five-pointed star and a trail of dots above it. The design is drawn in a single dark brown-black ink with solid, even lines and no shading. It is photographed against a pale, embroidered fabric, with a silver ring on one finger.

Mrs Abernethy hands you the iron key the evening before the new moon and tells you not to water the silver vines until the crescent is thin enough to slip under the gate. You nod as if you understand, though the vines have been climbing the south wall for longer than either of you has been alive, and nobody in the village has ever seen them bloom. She taps the pewter can on her boot, sets it on the path beside you, and goes inside without looking back.

After dark you kneel among the beds with the lamp turned low. The vines curl up the brickwork in scrolls, each tendril doubling back on itself, and every curl is beaded with tiny seed-dots that catch the light like dew that refused to fall. Low by the bed's edge a single star-shaped flower has opened, and a trail of pollen dots drifts from it up toward the sky, as if someone had marked a path and wanted you to follow it home.
By midnight the can is still full, and you realise the rule was never about the vines. The gate has grown over with new tendrils in the dark, and on the potting shed door, in Mrs Abernethy's careful pencil, someone has written: leave the last bead for the gardener. You press the final seed into the soil with your thumb and feel the bed warm beneath your palm.
At dawn the crescent has thinned to a sliver and the star flower folds itself shut. The gate swings open onto the lane, and a line of seed-dots runs down the cobbles towards the harbour, where the fishing boats are coming in one by one with their lamps still lit.
