Black and grey crescent moon tattoo with soft shaded edges and a small heart left as bare skin at its lower curve, on the inner wrist and forearm.

Crescent moon with a heart on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon sits on the inner wrist, outlined in black with the inner body shaded in soft grey gradients. A small heart shape, left as untouched skin, sits near the lower tip of the crescent. The photo is taken close up at a slight angle against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruben painted the moon on the cab door of the old Bedford the week before the Gypsum Pass road closed for resurfacing. He worked with a fine airbrush and a tin of grey he mixed himself, feathering the inside of the crescent until it looked less like paint than weather, then outlined the edge in black so it would read from the far end of the yard.

He masked one spot before he sprayed. A small heart, no bigger than my palm, sat low on the curve where the shadow thickened, and he left it bare metal. When I asked what it was for he shrugged and said a truck should carry one thing nobody could improve on.

I drove the route alone after that, hauling diesel out past the dry lake to the solar plant, leaving before the heat and coming back under a moon that hung so low it seemed to rest on the bonnet. On the long straight the crescent caught the headlights and the bare heart went pale as a coin. Somewhere past marker forty, with the radio gone to hiss, I started talking to it the way you talk to a dog that has followed you a long way.

The road reopened in spring. Ruben had gone to Lisbon by then, and the depot manager gave the cab a hurried coat of white for a new contract. He sprayed around the moon out of habit, and when I climbed down that morning I saw the heart was still there, small and clean at the bottom of the crescent, waiting for the light to come round again.
