Matching sun mandala tattoos on two ankles
Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet are shown with matching black tattoos. The upper one is a sun with a ring of pointed petals and small dots around it, drawn in fine black outline. The lower one on the ankle is a larger mandala-style sun with a circle of scalloped petals, inner dots and outer dots. Both are in black ink only and sit on pale skin against a dark, soft background.

The galley stove had gone out twice before noon, and Mags Pell was still coaxing it with driftwood when the bosun ducked under the hatch and asked whether the sun was coming up or not. "Ask the sea," she said. "It has been keeping it from us since Tuesday."

Her grandmother had told her the sun was once a single bright coin that lived at the bottom of a well at Skerrow. Two sisters, Ysolde and Brannagh, hauled it up on a rope each morning and shared the light between their two houses. One dry summer the rope frayed, and the coin split clean down the middle. Each half sank to a different harbour, and each one still shone from inside, a flower of scalloped petals with small bright seeds set around its rim.
Mags had never believed a word of it, but she had a habit of scratching that same shape into the condensation on the porthole while the kettle boiled. When the cook's mate, a boy from the Orkney end, asked what it was, she told him it was the sun's footprint, left behind where it had stepped ashore to visit its sister.
The fog lifted at four bells. The boy swore the light came from the west, where the two halves were said to meet at low tide. Mags filled the kettle, then stopped and pressed her thumb to the wet glass, leaving a small round mark beside the drawing. "There," she said. "Now we are square."
