Dotwork mandala on a calf
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala sits on the outer calf, built from a solid black central ring around a white dot centre. Layers of fine stippled dots and bold black petal shapes radiate outward, with short spiked rays extending past the outer edge. The design is in black ink only, photographed straight on against a brick wall and paving stones.

Old Marta kept the sun-clock by the well, a ring of black stones her mother had set into the ground the year the orchard flooded. At its centre she left a single white pebble, bare as a moon, and around it she laid the dark seeds of the poppies in rows so fine a sparrow could not find a gap. Every morning she raised the shutters and counted the rays that fell across the paving.

Her grandson Tobiah came home from the mill in the autumn with a purse of coins and no intention of staying. He stood at the wall and said the clock was only shadows, and shadows did not need a gardener. Marta said nothing. She took him to the middle of the ring and told him to look down. In the white pebble he could see his own face, small and round as a coin, and beyond it the dots of seed lay like pilgrims waiting at a shrine.
He stayed through the frost. He learned the petals, which opened one at a time as the light climbed, and the spikes, which he cut back each February so the sun could reach the wall without scorching the lavender. When Marta died in the thaw he found the clock still turning under the snow, its rays pointing east as they always had.
He did not sell the mill. He sold the coins and bought more seed. Each morning he counts the rays, and each morning the pebble stays white, and he has never once been able to say which of them is keeping the other.
