Crescent moon and sun on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close view from behind shows a person with dark hair in a loose bun, with a small crescent moon and a sun with radiating rays tattooed at the nape of the neck. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against bare skin. Hoop earrings, a blue above-ground pool and grass fill the blurred background.

The moon had come down off the water tower on Cutler Street with her silver hem snagged on the ladder, and she wanted the seamstress to mend it before midnight. Nell Rourke had sewn sails for the river barges for thirty years and did not like being hurried. She threaded a needle with thread the colour of tallow and told the moon to sit still.

The sun had been asleep under the railway arches since the afternoon fog took his way from him, his rays folded in close like a fan. Every night the gas lamps tried to pretend they were him, and every night they failed, and the moon pitied them. She told Nell that she and the sun had an old arrangement: he took the day and she took the dark, and neither crossed the seam where the two skies met above the gasworks.
When the last stitch was tied, the moon thanked her and rose, and at the seam she paused, because the sun had woken early and was waiting there with his hand out. They had not spoken in a hundred years. Nell watched from her window as they stood a moment in the same sky, one thin as a paring, one spread out like a bright wheel, and then they parted, and every lamp in the city went out at once.
