Hairstyle silhouettes and text on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an upper arm bearing a black tattoo of four small hairstyle silhouettes in a diagonal row, with the words The Big Bang Theory written in a thin italic script beneath them. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the skin is pale against a white background. The tattoo appears to be a temporary design, and a grey top and reddish-purple hair are visible at the left of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the kettle's only just boiled. You want to hear about the four shapes in the window, or you want to get home to your telly? Right then. Back in the winter the Lower Briggate lamps went out at ten and nobody bothered to fix them, a sign-writer called Teddy Plaskett came up the stairs above this shop with a tin of black enamel and a brush no thicker than an eyelash.

Four men came in that same week, each wanting the same thing: his outline on the glass before the Council took the shopfront for a bank. Teddy would not paint faces. He painted only what sat on top of a head. A quiff rolling over like a wave, a side parting cut as straight as a ruler, a short back and sides squared off like a hymn book, and a fringe falling forward like a curtain at the end of a show. Beneath them, in a thin italic hand, he lettered the words OPEN LATE, though we had never once been open late.
The men came back every Thursday to see whether the shapes still fitted them. They did, for years. Then hair went grey, went thin, went wherever hair goes, and the shapes stayed exactly where Teddy had put them. Last Thursday the fourth one came in, bald as a boiled egg, and asked me to tidy up the fringe he hadn't had since the lamps came back on. I told him I'd paint it on instead, and I did, right there on the glass, while the rain came down on Briggate and the street lamps finally flickered on.
