The moon wagon had gone lame at Spalding, so Old Ambrose pushed the last six miles himself with one hand on the painted board that had once been the ring gate. It was a crescent of blue-black, and across it ran roses in red and grey, one for every season Pemberton's Travelling Wonder had turned a profit. There were fewer roses every year. Hannah had stopped painting new ones after her knee went, and the board had a bare patch where the leaves had faded to nothing.

Ambrose had told the ticket boys this was nonsense. Now the field at Holbeach held the last tent, the lamps were sold, and eleven people had bought tickets for the closing night.
Hannah came out after the drum with a pot of madder red and a brush worn to a point. She asked what she should paint, since the show was finished. He said nothing was left to paint. She painted one rose anyway, low on the lower horn where the cloth met the grass, and the wet red took the lamplight the way a coin does.
They rolled the wagon into the ring with nobody in it. The grey mare stamped twice at the edge of the dark, and the crowd of eleven clapped politely, looking through the empty middle of the moon at the stars beyond.
