Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The left panel shows a hand with small black crescent moon outlines and a cluster of tiny dots on the fingers, drawn in fine, delicate linework with solid ink. The right panel shows the matching gold crescent moon ring with a pale, iridescent oval stone on a grey marble surface. The split composition places the skin view beside the product view for comparison.

He asked for the ring. Not his, he said, but the one left behind in the ladies' on Saturday, the one with a gold moon hooked round a milky stone like a sliver of sky caught in a net. Ivy had pocketed it that morning meaning to take it to the lost property box, and then forgotten. It had been knocking against her hip all evening every time she bent to the shelves.

Ivy could have kept it. Instead she slid it across the counter, and when the band struck up the last waltz she went out onto the floor herself, leaving the hatch unlocked and the brass ticket lying face up on the wood, a small gold crescent catching the light until nobody was left to claim it.
