The guard turned the stone over under his thumb as though it might still be wet. It was the size of a fingernail, cut by my grandfather into a diamond with eleven facets, and each facet held a different piece of the afternoon. Turquoise where the sky reached it, pale silver where the road did.

Grandfather cut stones in a shed behind the petrol station at Tallow Creek, and he used to say a facet was a promise to catch the light from every side. He never sold a stone he hadn't finished twice. This one he had finished three times, the last just before the cancer took his hands, so I had driven it across two state lines in a sock because I had been told it was the only thing he meant to leave me that wasn't debt.

"What's it worth?" the guard asked. He had a sunburnt neck and a clipboard he kept not looking at.

"Nothing to you," I said. "It's for a man in Marrow Well who owes my grandfather a saddle and two years of silence." I touched the thin silver band on my own hand, the one with the little heart cut out of it, which my mother said was the only piece of jewellery my grandfather ever made that didn't have to be paid for twice.

He waved me through. I put the stone in the cup holder and drove on into the flat gold afternoon, where the sun came through the facets and laid a grid of small bright triangles across the dashboard, as if someone had drawn a map of roads that went nowhere but were exactly where they should be.
