Three dots tattoo on a finger

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a hand with mint green nails and thin gold rings on two fingers. A small tattoo of three black dots sits on one finger between the knuckles, with the dots set in a triangular arrangement. The blurred pink floral background keeps the focus on the hand and the tiny ink.

Brother Anselm taught me that a pause is a kind of mercy. He kept a small horn pot of gall ink and a quill cut from a goose that had died in the yard during the wet spring, and with it he set the stops in our psalter the way the old copyists did: a dot above the line for a short breath, a dot level with the letters for a longer one. The three-dot stop, the distinctio, he saved for the places where a sentence turned back on itself and the reader needed to stand still before going on.

I was seventeen and clumsy with the pen. My first page had the dots scattered like spilt pepper, and Anselm lifted it to the window, looked for a long moment, then laughed until he had to sit down on the step. "You have made the psalm sound like a man who has forgotten his way home," he said. He took my hand and showed me how to set three points in a triangle, one high and two low, so the eye would not slide off them.

The abbey burned the winter I left for the coast. I did not hear of it until spring, from a carter with a cough who had a sack of salt for the kitchens and a bundle of scorched vellum he had pulled from the ruins. He gave me a leaf with the stops still legible, three dots standing in a triangle beside a line I could not finish reading.

I still carry that leaf in my coat. Some mornings I press my thumb over the dots and say the psalm through to them, and I stop there, every time, for the length of a breath.
