Crescent moon mandala on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A diptych showing a black ink crescent moon tattoo on a woman's upper back, seen from behind with her hair tied up. The crescent is filled with symmetrical mandala-like ornaments, circles, triangles and small dots drawn in fine black lines. The left photograph shows the whole design on a white loose top, and the right is a close-up of the shoulder where the shading and linework are clearer.

Mind the sack by the door, it's full of turnips and I'll not have them rolling under the table again. Now. The winter the Harrow boys lost their father's ox to the bog, old Mother Ashdown went up the hill at midnight to ask the moon for a way out. She took a pair of shears, a ball of undyed wool and a tin of lamp black, because the moon, she said, only listens to people who bring their own tools.

Up on the ridge the moon had been worn thin by a month of cloud. It was a sliver, nothing more, hanging there like a bent sickle nobody had come back for. Mother Ashdown sat in the frozen heather and began to work on it, not with ink, for no ink would take on cold stone, but with the shears, snipping the wool into circles and triangles and small hard dots, pressing each one against the crescent's edge until the whole thing was ringed with pattern as close as lace.
Then she sang the old count, the one for mending fences, and every knot she had tied went up into the sky and set itself in place. The moon grew a little fatter that night, the bog froze hard enough to walk on, and the ox came home on its own four feet, scowling, with mud to its eyes.
Mind you, the moon has never once paid for the wool. Ask any farmer's wife what the next frost will want back, and she'll tell you it wants the shears.
