Crescent moon, star and dotted bands on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held near the lips, showing small black tattoos on three fingers: a crescent moon, a five-pointed star and a thin single line band. Dotted lines run beside the moon and below the star, and a dotted band wraps around another finger. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black, with the design kept small and spaced along the fingers against plain skin and a light grey top.

The snow stopped at ten, but the lane kept filling behind the carrier's cart, and Maud Ferrier stood at the back kitchen window counting lamps the way her father had taught her, one dot for every light she could still see along the ridge. By eleven there were only three. She pulled the shutters, banked the range and went up the back stairs with a candle, because Mr Hallam had come down twice complaining that his wife would not stop humming.

On the landing she found a ring: a band of brass no wider than a straw, scratched with a crescent moon on its inner face and a row of fine dots along its edge. It was not the wife's. Mrs Hallam wore garnets and kept them in a velvet case. Maud turned the band over in her palm and noticed a trail of small wet prints across the boards, spaced evenly, each one like a dot on the ring, leading away from the guest rooms toward the back stairs.
The prints ended at the yard door, which was barred from inside. Out in the yard the snow was blue under the moon, and the dotted trail ran past the well house and the stable before it stopped beneath the old lamp post. A tin star hung there on a nail, turning slowly in the wind. Someone had pinned a paper chart beneath it, pricked through with a needle: the sky over the pass, every star marked with a single hole.
Maud read the chart by lantern until her fingers ached. Beneath the last pinprick someone had written in a child's careful hand, I am still counting. She went back inside, slid the ring onto the hook beside the kitchen clock, and banked the fire again. At dawn the trail was gone under fresh snow, but the ring was still on its hook, and a single bead of frost had formed on the sill beside it, waiting to be counted.
