Tiny ringed planet tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on white bedsheets with black nail polish and several silver rings. A small black ink tattoo of a planet with a ring around it sits on the side of one finger, drawn in delicate fine lines. Two tiny solid black marks sit on the wrist near a wristwatch, and the image is in black and grey tones with a plain, uncluttered composition.

Sit closer, you with the wet boots, and mind the lamp, because this is the part where the old women used to spit over their left shoulder. The star I mean is the one the shepherds of the lower valley called the Slow Man, the one that will not keep to the road the others walk. Every night it crept along the same band of sky as the moon and the sun and the rest, but a finger's width off, always a little behind, as if it had stopped to look at something.

Now there was a girl named Ruhi who kept the ewes at Tel Asmar, and she had a loop of goat-hair cord that her mother had knotted for her. One dry winter she decided the Slow Man was lonely and she would bring it down. She carried the cord up the ziggurat steps at dusk, tied one end to a copper ring from a broken door hinge, and threw the other end at the sky. It fell back on her head. She tried again the next night, and the next, until the priests came to shout at her and the sheep wandered off into the wheat.
On the forty-first night the cord fell soft across her palm and she laughed, and the star, which had been sitting low over the western wall, slid a little way along the sky as if to be polite. Ruhi understood then that it was never going to come down the cord. It was going round the sky the way she went round the fold, always circling a middle that was not itself. So she slid the copper ring onto her smallest finger, turned it once, and walked home in the dark, and the star followed the ring the whole way.
That is why, if you go up to the hill fields tonight and look west, you will find the Slow Man sitting just a finger's width behind the others, and why, in the lower valley, nobody ever asks a girl what she is doing with a ring on her finger. Now go on, the lamp is nearly out.
