Crescent moon tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A four panel collage shows a small black outline of a crescent moon with a tiny heart shape inside it, placed on the skin behind the ear. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is shown at close range from several angles. The photographs are taken indoors against a plain background with a coral earring visible in some panels, and the person's face is not shown.

Every boat that came up the slip at Porthgwidden Mill had a moon scratched into its transom before it went back in the water, and Nell Tregaskis had been allowed to do the hearts since she was nine. Her father said a moon without a heart in it was just a bit of light that left in the morning. He said it while rubbing linseed into planking, not looking up, the way he said most things that mattered.

The winter the Marigold came in with her keel sprung, Nell sat on an upturned crab pot with a fine nib and a pot of black ink and worked at the moon, small as a thumbnail, while the rain came sideways off the estuary. Her father was out at the sluice with the tide. The shipwright from Falmouth who had brought the boat up wanted to know why anybody bothered with a mark that small. Nell didn't answer him. She was thinking that the moon never stays full, that it wanes and goes thin like this, and that people kept looking up at it anyway.
When her father came back at dusk he found the work finished and the ink dry. He held the lantern close, turned his head, and said nothing for a long time. Then he pressed one thick thumb very gently against the small heart inside the curve, as if checking it was still warm, and said it would do.
