Small semicolon tattoo behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black semicolon sits on the skin behind an ear, with the ear and some dark hair visible at the edge of the frame. The ink is a single uniform black with crisp edges, and the tattoo is set against a soft, pale background of skin. The close, centred composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the slate roofs since dawn, so the letter-writer's stall under the market arcade had a pool at its back corner that Maud kept mopping with a folded sack. She had come for a sheet of good paper and a pot of ink, and she had not come for advice, though the old man at the stall gave it anyway, the way he gave everything, with a ledger in one hand and a pen in the other.

Her brother had gone to the coast for work and stopped writing. Maud had a letter half finished on the counter. It said the boats were in and the herring were poor and she had not yet decided whether to forgive him, and then it stopped with nothing at all. She asked the old man what a sentence like that ought to do. He took the pen, dipped it, and made a small dark dot with a curled tail sitting beneath it, then slid the paper across.

"That is a stop that is not a stop," he said. "It says the thought has reached its end, but the sentence has not let go of you yet. You may still say the rest."

Maud looked at the little mark for a long time while the rain drummed on the tarpaulin. Then she took up the pen and wrote on, and the word after the mark was forgive, and the word after that was soon. She folded the letter, paid him two pennies, and went out into the wet street with the paper buttoned inside her coat, where it stayed dry.
