Mickey Mouse outline behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a Mickey Mouse head sits behind the ear, drawn in a single thin black line with no shading. The ink is crisp and sits on lightly flushed skin, and the tattoo fills a small area against the hairline. The background is out of focus and shows the ear and dark teal hair, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Mind the ink, Ada said, for it dries quicker on a wet day and the harbour wind had been out since Tuesday. Old Tam Gilchrist had brought her a list of lettering for the Marigold, and at the bottom, in his wobbling capitals, was a request she did not want to write down. Three circles, he said. A head and two round ears, drawn with one line and no shading, the way his late wife used to draw them on the flour sacks for the bairns.

Ada had painted signs on Skerrow for forty years and had never once drawn a thing without a compass. But she had also never been asked by a man who had not spoken to his brother since the herring boats went quiet. So she sat on an upturned creel in the boatyard with a fine brush and a pot of ink, and she tried it freehand. The first circle wobbled like a drunk on the pier. The second closed too tight. The third came out right on the first pass, and she sat looking at it for so long the tide turned under the slipway.
Tam came down at dusk with his cap in his hands and looked at the little black outline for a long while. Then he took a folded envelope from his coat, and inside was a second drawing, the same three circles, done on the back of a tide table in a hand that was not his. Ada read it twice before she understood. His brother had sent it to him from the mainland, a week before, with no words at all.
They painted it together that night, and in the morning the Marigold went out past the breakwater with a small round mouse-shaped mark on her bow, facing the sea.
