Crescent moon with flowers and lanterns

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a crescent moon decorated with a mandala-style pattern, a feather, several flowers and sprigs of berries. Beaded strings drape from the moon's horns and hang down to three lanterns, one cage-style and two tapered. The fine, even linework is shaded with hatching and dotted details, and the drawing is entirely in black ink on white paper.

Don't look at the ticket hut. It's been boarded since the spring the big top came down in the wind, and nobody in this town will tell you what the sign said before the rain got into the letters. Pull that stool closer. My knees won't carry me to the end of a sentence any more, so you'll have to lean in and listen like a customer.

The last season of Varley's Night Circus ran out of money in August, but the lanterns never stopped being paid for. Ada Crowe strung them herself every evening, one cage lantern for the lion's pen and two tapered ones for the high rope, and she swore the wire followed the moon round the field. Some nights the crescent hung so low over the big top it caught on the tent pole like a hook. The strongman's wife grew roses in biscuit tins along the caravan steps. The tightrope girl kept a grey feather in her hatband that she said came off a heron who had watched her fall twice and never once laughed.

Then Mr Varley sold the field to a man from the council with a clipboard and a boot full of paperwork. On the last night the lanterns were to come down for scrap. Ada would not have it. She climbed the pole in her good coat, hooked every bead chain she owned to the moon's two horns, and let the lanterns hang from them in a long slack curve over the empty ring.

Next morning the field was bare grass and a ring of trampled daisies. The council man found the wire still up, the lanterns gone, and a single feather pinned to his clipboard. He never came back to collect the rest.
