Dear Nell, the pass closed on Tuesday and it has not opened since, so you will have to take my word that the lane is buried up to the top of the gatepost. Mr Harrow came down from the upper rooms this morning with a flat wooden box under his arm, the sort a jeweller uses for rings, and asked me to find him a smith who could cut a key without seeing the lock. I told him there was no smith within forty miles and no road to fetch one. He laughed and said that was the trouble with most people, they waited for the road.

The box held a padlock shaped like a heart, all scrollwork, the metal worn dull at the shoulders where somebody's thumb had rubbed it for years. Beside it lay a key with a bow shaped like a heart too, and a length of ribbon knotted through the loop in a way that looked newer than everything else. He said the lock had been his wife's, that she died in the autumn, and that she had insisted the key be kept apart from it so neither could be used without the other. I did not know what to say, so I said the kettle was on.
I spent the afternoon with the box on the kitchen table, turning the key under the lamp. The ribbon had been stitched on rather than tied, and when I eased the thread loose there was a folded paper rolled inside the bow, dry as bark. It had three words in an unsteady hand: "Not yet, love." Harrow read it standing up and went back up the stairs without a word.
I have left the box on his landing, key and lock together, with the ribbon hanging over the banister like a bell rope. He has not come down, and the snow is still falling, so I suppose it will be a long night for both of us. Tell Mum I am warm and fed and she is not to worry about the lane. Your loving brother, Tom.
